The Rome Mosaics’ Tour

PrassedeWe start our tour with the visit of the ancient roman mosaics displayed in the Archaeological Museum  (Palazzo Massimo) where we see also some original frescoed rooms complete with their floors reconstructed inside the museum.                                                                                                                                                        We’ll begin then a journey through the medieval mosaics : from the basilica of Santa Pudenziana whose apse mosaic, dating from the early V century, still shows all of its late Roman tradition to Santa Prassede to see the IX century Mosaico Bacco di P. Massimobyzantine mosaics of the apse and of the golden  chapel of San Zenone, one of the main masterpieces of the period. Finally we will visit Saint Mary Major. Here, among other art jewels, are the XIII century medioeval mosaics by Iacopo Turriti contemporary of Giotto.

S. Maria Maggiore Mosaico AbsideFinally we’ll drive to the Vatican where we’ll have booked a visit to the Studio del Mosaico Vaticano inside the Vatican City. The Studio was created in 1578 to work in the decoration of St Peter Basilica. (In St Peter every kind of painting, frescoes or canvases, is replaced by mosaics). After the visit of the studio where you will see how mosaics are actually done,  the 17hundreds glass archive and the glass melting lab, you will be still in time (if you wish), to get into San Peter Basilica to admire its quite incredible mosaic decoration.
