We begin our visit with the collection of antiquities among which are the famous Laocoon and the Apollo del Belvedere. Then, crossing galleries and rooms full of art treasures, we move to the “Stanze di Raffaello” (Raphael Rooms), Pope Julius II private quarters frescoed by the great renaissance master Raphael. The incredible “School of Athens” is in this apartment. Next, we enter the Sistine Chapel that Pope Sixtus IV erected in 1473 as his private papal church. Here Michelangelo spent almost 9 years painting the ceiling with scenes from the “Creation” and a few years later the altar wall with the “Last Judgment“.
After the Chapel, through a reserved passage, we’ll enter directly into St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in the world, and perhaps the most impressive of them all. Here are Michelangelo’s Pietà, Bernini’s Baldacchino (Canopy) and the Papal altar where the Apostle is buried. Leaving the church we will reach St. Peter’s square surrounded by the huge Colonnade and see the famous balcony of the blessings.
