9. The Lake of Bracciano, the Ghost Town of Monterano and the Etruscan Cities of the Dead in Sutri

We make our way towards the ghost city driving past the Lake of Bracciano and the lakeside town of Anguillara,

Monterano: Going up a suggestive forested dirt road we reach the top of the plateau where once laid the ancient town of Monterano, abandoned at the end of the 1700 as a result of the plague. Half hidden by the vegetation, will appear the arches of the aqueduct and the ancient walls and gradually, within them, the dilapidated structures of the Ducal Palace and the ancient churches, the Convent and Basilica of St. Bonaventure, designed by G. Lorenzo Bernini.

 After a break for lunch, our tour goes on turning still north to reach the province of Viterbo where lays:

Sutri: Built high on a volcanic outcrop and surrounded by deep valleys, it owes to the dominant position its strategic importance from the time of the Etruscan until the Middle Ages. In a wooded area at the foot of the rock, stand out among the many Etruscan and Roman testimonies the Necropolis consisting of 64 tombs excavated in the tuffstone, the Amphitheatre, a small Coliseum entirely dug into the rock, the cave church of St Mary, an ancient Mithraeum adapted to Christian worship and decorated by medieval frescoes.

After the visit we’ll drive back to Rome circumnavigating the lake of Bracciano.
